This is the either the writings of one of the greatest filmmakers ever to be...or the ramblings of a conceited madman...the choice is yours.Feb 14, 2008:2:00 A.M.... Decided finally to start logging things. My name is Laurence Maher, and I'm a filmmaker. Not to be conceited, but I'm a good one. A while back I shot a film in D/FW called "ALMOST". It's up for distribution via VANGUARD CINEMA in LA. It was shot on 16MM after I got screwed by a guy who was working for me at my sole propiertorship "Action Video Productions." Give a guy an opportunity to get out of working at Best Buy, and what do you get in this business? Someone who writes a script on the clock while your out of town and still has the nerve to get paid by you for it. I had a deal with the guy that he'd keep working for me until I got the business off the ground. He got every bit of money I made for a couple of years on the deal...just to pay his lousy bills and his bitch of a wife. Then like the opportunist he was he moved on when he didn't need me anymore. (Which he did, he just didn't know it).....So I decided to quit the "means to an end" video business and make a film myself. Big mistake of mine to invite a friend of this guy's along....who ended up doing his best to steal my film crew for their own gains. This "friend" and his father during the shooting of this "ALMOST" feature (both homeless, and I provided them with food and shelter) also decided to steal my credit cards and rack up 8,000 dollars on them to which I luckily convinced VISA was theft. The guy who was working for me also owed me $11,000. (Lots of money altogether)....In the end, they all got what they deserved, as I played chess, making them think they were my friends until they could no longer hurt my movie, and then I gave them the boot, never calling them again, and never explaining why. Not that they would have deserved an explanation at all.That was my first real lesson in the politics of filmmaking. Unfortunately, you can't trust anyone...not even close friends you've known for 2 years or better. (Hell, Friends I've had for 20 years may never get the benefit of the doubt again.)10 Years later, I've done the festival circuit with said film and have finally been offered distribution. I'm also finihsing up on a thriller that I shot on DV called "RECEIVER". That I should have no problem distributing with the same company, I imagine. I've also completed something I've never seen anyone do in my life....a pilot for a sit com I completed 100% BY MYSELF.Yes, I did EVERYTHING. And it's a funny show...called ONE CHEAP MOVE. Currently trying to get it picked up by Hollywood Hierarchy. (Is that how you spell Hierarchy?)That's pending on various. Feature Horror. Also, in the works, a guy who might connect me with KEN WATANABE regarding a real-life thriller, with me as writer and perhaps director. Thiscontact wants to meet with Watanabe's production head on March 18, 2008. I'll be ready. Before then, I plan to start putting out small OCM episodes 5 times per week to gain more of a following. I got side tracked because some guy on a bike picked a fight with me as I was driving through UNT campus....(He cut in front of my car....when I honked he got off his bike and came to my driver's side car looking for a fight....I got out, and I defended myself.....when he pummeled my face (yes, bleeding), I had had enough, so I kicked his ass, choking him out like a little bitch, and he had the NERVE TO PRESS CHARGES FOR ASSAULT! WHAT A NANCY!....Yes, anything and everything will keep you from filmmaking if it can. Meanwhile, I had to reschedule with the "KEN WATANABE" guy. We'll talk again on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.....until then, some guy I met on Craig's List wants to hook up. Otherwise, get out of my way.LaurenceMARCH 3, 2008Well, it's 2:45 a.m. Been realizing I haven't done much yet....oh, and that my last entry was off by at least several days.....should have been like Feb. 27 or something....anyway.....Okay......lesson to all filmmakers, If it takes several attempts to get off of your ass, don't sweat it too much......Christ, I've done this a Zillion times and it's still hard to get motivated. Tomorrow (or later today, really) I start kicking ass. Gym, clean house, clean food, etc. Hopefully before I turn in at 7:00 P.M. tomorrow with my wife (made here that deal....not easy)..... I'll have a new One Cheap Move short bit up on the Internet.....although, fuck, how easy will that be when I can't even get the fucking OCM Web Episode 2A uploaded properly into Revver after more than a year of trying to.....GAY....Don't give up Bat-Fans....even though the Heath Ledger Joker Batman movie called "The Dark Knight" looks like they STILL didn't do it right after the Jack Nicholson disaster (judging from the previews)....we still have LAURENCE MAHER as our front man ....that..... in and of itself....is worth its weight in gold......Laurence
